5/13/2023 0 Comments Peggy seeger the first time ever![]() ![]() There are over 1000 cover versions alongside Roberta Flack’s iconic recording. The final verse is telling often recorded by others as “I knew our joy would fill the earth”, Peggy sings the original and far more poignant “I thought our joy would fill the earth and last til the end of time”. With a simple and moving piano accompaniment, Peggy’s new interpretation reflects on the memory of overwhelming love, now tempered with a deep mature knowledge of its fragility and fleetingness. “It was a hell of a way to woo me back!” says Peggy. That was the only time he ever sang the song which went on to become one of the greatest love songs of all time. He sang it down a crackling transatlantic phone line to Peggy who had returned to the USA, unwilling to continue an affair with a married man. The song was written for her by her lover Ewan MacColl in early 1957. Now 87, she’s reclaiming the song as an older woman reflecting over a lifetime of love and loss. ![]() Peggy Seeger IS the 'Face' of 'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face'. ![]()

5/13/2023 0 Comments Gilman the yellow wallpaper![]() It is the room’s wallpaper, a “repellant” and “smouldering unclean yellow”, with “sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin” that forms the centrepiece of the story. ![]() Perhaps, the narrator muses, it had once been a nursery or playroom. The wallpaper is torn, the floor scratched and gouged. ![]() The room her husband selects as their bedroom, though large, airy and bright, is barred at the window and furnished with a bed that is bolted to the floor. The house is “queer”, long abandoned and isolated. There she is to rest, take tonics, air and exercise – and absolutely forbidden to engage in intellectual work until well again. The narrator is brought by her physician husband to a summer retreat in the countryside to recover from her “temporary nervous depression – a slight hysterical tendency”. Gilman’s short story is a straightforward one. ![]() 5/13/2023 0 Comments Patchett canto![]() ![]() The theme of hope and dreams are discussed through the characters in the novel. How is the theme of hopes and dreams discussed in the novel? Each character goes through stages of fear and parallel to that negative spectrum of emotion, love. Opera works as the in-novel parallelism of events that happen to the characters as they go through the hostage crisis. A hostage situation, with all its action and drama, therefore is fair game for translating into an opera. ![]() Opera is a theatrical, highly-stylized art form that covers a wide spectrum of emotions and themes often at their most passionate, most intense manifestations. ![]() What does Opera/Music symbolize in the novel? The novel is inspired by events in the Lima Hostage Crisis during the 90’s. The phrase Bel Canto in fact is an opera term that means beautiful singing and unsurprisingly the characters in the novel are either opera singers themselves or have their lives profoundly affected by music. The title is a reference to the centrality of music, Opera in particular, to the flow of the story and the interactions of the characters. What is the significance of the novel’s title? Joel scoffed at the suggestion, and sportingly offered to allay his guests’ fears by leaving the table first. Over the meal there was some discussion about the various superstitions associated with unlucky number thirteen, including the one that the first person to get up from a table of thirteen would also be the first one to die. One or two guests had to cancel, with the result that only thirteen people finally gathered for dinner on that fateful evening. One evening in 1898, a wealthy South African named Woolf Joel hosted a small private dinner at The Savoy. His intended function was to act as the fourteenth guest in the private dining rooms when thirteen guests were present, and his creation was directly related to the unfortunate demise of a Savoy client over quarter of a century earlier.
